RARE FOOTAGE.
This one will be of interest to fans of a certain age who recall seeing those pics in black and white featuring the girls of Camp Amazon when reading their copy of AIA.Very few fans here in the UK ever saw video footage of their bouts.Susan Skarvan was of course one of three sisters who all fought for the outfit.
I bought quite a few things from DuLong / Camp Amazon back in the day but was usually disappointed ; the action just wasn't what I personally looked for but continued to buy because of the beauty of her girls :>) Judell was definitely one of the big pioneers in getting a bunch of good-looking girls to wrestle.
ReplyDeleteI remember this match as being promoted by Judell in her newsletter as the one match she would use if she ever had a chance to put a girls match on mainstream TV to promote female wrestling in a serious way.
But I personally liked the Treena Antonelli / Cind Brooks match a lot more than this one.

They must have been among the most dedicated and involved women wrestlers here in the U.S.A. at that time and they must have been great pioneers since they were covered by AIA in the U.K. I would predict that Judell and her fem wrestlers will probably remain immortal. Judell must have worked herself like hell to assemble all the girls and coordinate everything over those years. What a really superb woman.
Judell and her women were good, no question. How do you think they would have fared against the best of Europe (Bea Goffin, Maggie, Sherry, et al)?
ReplyDeleteThough I bought stuff from Judell during that period due to the beauty of her wrestlers, I never thought any of the action was that great.
ReplyDeleteI don't think any of them would have held a candle to any of those you mentioned other than with their physical beauty ; but certainly not in wrestling.
In all honesty and while being a fan of theirs back then, I think the popularity of Judell and her girls came from us all being shocked that there were girls that pretty that really wrestled.
That's the way I was sucked into the Camp Amazon spell ...
Looking at the 3X5 photos samples she sent out of girls like Cindy Brooks, Liz Meles, Treena Antonelli and the Scarvan sisters all 'done up' as if they were going out on a date melted me every time and had me always sending ordering ... and almost every time hoping for action that never quite measured up to my personal expectations.
Not complaining, knocking them ... it was exciting back then. They were definitely way ahead of their time as far as selling sexy female wrestlers. :>)
Wonder what Judell and her girls think now about how huge this all has become ?
Females have always participated in wrestling throughout history but it appears that Judell's enterprise (and similar one's in Europe and elswwhere, even though they may not have known about each other's existence) probably was a big surprise for its groundbreaking effort at getting female wrestling accepted in the U.S.A. After all, back in the 1970's organized female wrestling was a complete dud. Who in the hell had any idea it would blossom and grow ? ... Nobody. I bet they could have, with the right training, given Europe's best and brightest a real run for their money.
ReplyDeleteGranted, if you have bought and seen original and entire matches you have the best evidence for supporting your views but judging from the YouTube clips I can only say I can't agree for right now that the Camp Amazon fem wrestlers weren't able to measure up to what some might have expected. I understand you can't always make a decent judgment based on clips but from what I've seen they look like they're delivering decent action. Hell, from the several Y! Groups devoted to Judell and her Camp Amazon women even Judell participated as well as trained and coached during all those years.
Judell and her women are probably right now (and rightfully) basking in high adoration and commendation for all they've accomplished.
